What is Prevention?

The Role of Prevention:
  • To consider the overall health of the diverse communities we serve.
  • To prevent problem gambling, prevention providers aim to intervene well before gambling ever becomes a problem.
  • Prevention work should be based on acknowledging and building upon individuals' strengths and thereby increasing community resilience. Communities would be able to build upon their own wisdoms, knowledge, and expertise to increase health in all of the ways that they can.

Community Engagement

Everyone who is affected by an issue that impacts their community should have a say in the decision-making around it.
Community Engagement is the process by which citizens are engaged to work together on behalf of their communities in partnership with prevention providers to create and realize bold visions for the future of their communities. Community Engagement can involve partnering with citizens about community initiatives, inviting their input, collaborating with them to generate solutions, and partnering with the community from the beginning to tackle community issues.

Community Engagement increases community cohesion and allows for the community to have ownership over the outcomes that will ultimately impact them.
